After a hot, humid summer, the heat has started to ease off this past week. For me, that indicates it is the time for one of my twice yearly major prunes and a good time to start planting.
Natives plants are ‘pruned’ in the wild by animals and our garden natives will also benefit from cutting back. Pruning encourages plants to become dense and bushy, and it helps to control pests and diseases and prolong their life. Native grasses can be cut right back to the base to rejuvenate them.
Be careful not to over-prune too many plants at once as this will reduce habitat for the wildlife that depend on them for shelter.
With the regular rain we’ve had over summer, it is also a good time to plant. UWG has been gifted some native plant fertiliser tablets. The tablets are placed in the hole when planting and release nutrients to the plants in a ratio that natives can better utilise.
