An enthusiastic group of plants lovers gathered at the NICA rooms to hear Joan Heavey’s presentation on local Orchids. Joan has spent years researching, locating and identifying the Orchids found in and around Noosa Shire.
During the talk she covered the structure of Orchid flowers and how to identify the different Genus. We also learnt about the leaves and what to look for when there aren’t any flowers. The photos of the local species were excellent and beautiful to see. A highlight of the talk was learning about the fascinating ways Orchids pollinate.
Joan wants us all to know that removing Orchids from their natural habitat is pointless. Apart from the long term environmental damage, they just don’t survive. Orchids have a vital relationship with the fungi in the soil around them and this can’t be replicated in a new location.
UWG greatly appreciates Joan sharing her time and knowledge with us.
