‘How to Verge’ Workshop
Last year UWG partnered with Noosa Council, as part of their Urban Greening Program, to install two demonstration Verge Gardens. Our recent July workshop provided information about constructing a verge garden and showcased the progress of the two demonstration gardens.
Shaun’s presentation focused on the steps to take when planning and creating a verge garden. He spoke about the importance of knowing council guidelines and suggested talking to neighbours about your plans. He said the key to a successful verge garden is assessing the site carefully and choosing plants suited to the conditions. There were also many helpful hints about how to create an aesthetically pleasing garden. Thanks to Noosa Council for funding free plants from Coolum Community Native Nursery to help attendees get started on their own verge gardens.
Workshop participants were then able to visit the two demonstration verge gardens at Peregian Beach and Castaways Beach. Sarah and Veronica spoke about the planning, planting and maintenance of their gardens and answered questions about design, preparation and plant choices. It was great to see the progress of their gardens and how they are already contributing to the urban greening and biodiversity of their neighbourhoods.
