Welcome Adrian Gallagher to our UWG subcommittee. Some of you will remember Adrian from his presentation at the UWG 2025 ‘Feeding Wild Birds’ workshop. Adrian brings a wealth of knowledge, enthusiasm and passion for the local environment to our program.
Bio – Dr Adrian Gallagher BVSc (Hons) MANZCVS (Avian Health)
I am a recently retired Avian Veterinarian.
I have always had a strong interest in birds and nature in particular. Our family grew up with properties outside Maryborough which were used for cattle production, my father and grandfather were great teachers. After graduating from the University of Queensland with honours and a Bachelor of Veterinary science in 1984, I worked in several general practices on Brisbane’s Northside. At this time avian medicine and surgery was in its infancy. During this time, I continued to grow my avian knowledge base completing my membership in Avian Health with the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in 1994.
I established Australia’s first Avian only practice, Brisbane Bird Vet, in 2006. This grew to a three-man practice, seeing only birds, which I sold in 2024. Although our primary patient base was companion birds, the practice was dedicated to the treatment of wildlife ‘pro bono’ and we saw a heavy wildlife case load.
I am very passionate about Bushcare, particularly concerning the coastal reserve, birding and botany. I love the premise of Urban Wildlife Gardens and plan to use my skills to promote its causes.
