The Native Garden Design Workshop, held on Sunday, 20 September 2026 in collaboration with Coolum Native Nursery, was a great success. We sincerely thank the Coolum Native Nursery team for their professionalism and support in hosting this workshop.
An enthusiastic group attended both sessions which started by discussing the key factors that shape a successful native garden design. Aspect, topography, privacy and water management were discussed. Think about views and biodiversity, and of course, existing and planning future infrastructure, something to think about when designing your garden.
Another topic discussed which we often overlook, is fire rating, making a conscious decision of how you want to deal with fire, maybe making a boundary separation to stop fire encroaching on your property.
Shaun explained how native plants offer abundant opportunities to create visual contrast and form. Placing a subtle plant beside a more dramatic plant can highlight the distinctive qualities of both.
