It’s nice to stumble on the wonders of nature, which is what I did one day while walking around my garden. I noticed several caterpillars in my young native mulberry tree, Pipturus argenteus, and, on further inspection, many more.

UWG is hoping to schedule a follow up to our February workshop, ‘Creating Ponds for Frog Habitat’, with a practical demonstration by Sean Morrow of building a frog habitat. We are looking for a member who, perhaps already has plans to install a small pond in their urban wildlife garden and, would like some free expert advice from Sean plus willing helpers to construct the pond at the workshop.

At first glance, I thought this was a Blue-tongued skink, but after a second look I wasn’t so sure. Last week after the rain had stopped, this pretty skink came out of the garden and was lying on the pavers.

I am still learning about native plantings and, like most gardens, ours is a work in progress. As humble as it is, it is home to a variety of creatures. The planting of natives has given us the pleasure of welcoming local wildlife, an immeasurable joy.

Spring and summer are breeding season for a lot of our local fauna and that means more movement including in our urban areas. Wildlife move into new areas for many reasons including to look for a mate, find new territory and search for nest building materials. My property has male echidnas out most nights making a ruckus as they move through the leaf litter.
