Our workshop this month was a productive morning as Sean Morrow, from One Earth Landscaping, coordinated the construction of a frog habitat pond at Noosa Women’s Shed with willing helpers from the Women’s Shed and UWG
Butcher birds are our beloved native Australian songbirds belonging to the Artamidae family which includes Woodswallows and Currawongs. There are three main species of butcher bird found in Australia which are the Grey Butcherbird (Cracticus torquatus), the Pied Butcherbird (Cracticus nigrogularis), and the Black Butcherbird (Melloria quoyi).
Everybody knows the familiar European Honeybee, introduced into our lives through childhood books and cartoons with their distinctive black and yellow pattern, buzzing bee-sound and delicious nectar known as honey which has become a global commodity. Often forgotten are our endemic friends and their role in the ecosystem.

Our second Community workshop in partnership with Noosa Council was held at the J this month.
The two sessions were fully booked and the residents who turned up were enthusiastic and keen to find out how to turn their coastal gardens into havens for native wildlife.
Here in Southeast Queensland, we are lucky to have a region of diverse habitats which support hundreds of species of moths and butterflies both of which belong to the order of Lepidoptera, meaning ‘scaled wings’. Lepidoptera is one of the largest insect orders in the world with at least 160,000 species worldwide.
