Weed of the Month – Nut Grass
Nut grass is hated by lawn lovers and gardeners. It’s more of a garden weed than a bushland threat but will dominate any area it can get into.
Coastal Native Wildlife Gardens Workshop
Our second Community workshop in partnership with Noosa Council was held at the J this month.
The two sessions were fully booked and the residents who turned up were enthusiastic and keen to find out how to turn their coastal gardens into havens for native wildlife.
The Differences Between Butterflies and Moths
Here in Southeast Queensland, we are lucky to have a region of diverse habitats which support hundreds of species of moths and butterflies both of which belong to the order of Lepidoptera, meaning ‘scaled wings’. Lepidoptera is one of the largest insect orders in the world with at least 160,000 species worldwide.
Geology of the Noosa Shire February 2026 Workshop Highlights
Last month Phil Moran delivered a fascinating and enlightening talk to both novices and those more informed about our local geology.
Black Mountain Garden Visit
Our open garden visit this month was well attended despite the rainy weather. Those who had been to Shaun’s first open garden three years ago were amazed at the transformation. You can read how Shaun considered design concepts for his garden and see some early photos in the link.
Native Geckos vs Asian Gecko
We all know the familiar sound “click, click, click” in rapid succession, often heard but not seen from dawn until dusk, but once the bugs are out these nocturnal hunters are on the prowl and can become quite vocal and be a regular visitor to the patio, it is of course the Gecko!
Hazardous Plants – Euphorbia tirucalli
Some plants need to be sold with a health warning. This month we look at Fire sticks, an attractive but toxic garden plant.
Vale Pam Sweeney 1951-2026
Pam Sweeney was a volunteer member of NICA and UWG. It is with sadness that we remember Pam who has passed suddenly. We will remember her friendly open manner, smile and willingness to help and give her time when needed.
Aromatic Plants in the Urban Garden
There are many locally native plants suited to urban gardens that provide wonderful foliage aromas, many contain botanical and culinary properties as well as provide valuable habitat for wildlife.
